10 By Ten creates culturally relevant, elevated, big-event film and television content, reframing on and centering underrepresented perspectives. We push the boundaries of what kinds of stories are told, who gets to tell them, and how they are made and distributed to a global audience.
"You [tell stories] to change the world... the world changes according to the way people see it, and if you alter even by a millimeter, the way people look at reality, then you can change it."
–James Baldwin
With over 20 years of experience at the world's top media companies, Tendo Nagenda has delivered over 50 globally impactful films which have grossed over $2.7 billion worldwide and earned 18 Oscar, 22 BAFTA, and 50 NAACP Image Award nominations. His firm belief that content can change the way people see and experience the world led him to create 10 By Ten Pictures, whose primary mission is to tell big, original stories from unexpected and underrepresented perspectives. His unique background and fresh perspective embody the spirit of 10 By Ten. As the eldest son of working-class immigrant parents, he grew up between Los Angeles and Uganda, and developed a worldview that was heavily influenced by feelings of being a perpetual outsider.
"Because I never fit in one place, I learned to relate to a lot of different experiences."
In an industry known for a lack of representation in the C-suite, Tendo's exceptional talent for sourcing and developing material across genres led him to become the senior-most Black creative executive at two of the world's largest studios. As Vice President of Original Film at Netflix, he was charged with building a slate and led production of the company's initial foray into a big budget film portfolio. During his tenure, Netflix built the most prolific studio in the industry and led in Oscar nominations for three straight years. Prior to Netflix, he spent 8 years as Executive Vice President of Production at Disney, where he led the studio's focus into mining its formidable IP and created several original classics.
Tendo has been recognized across the industry for championing diverse voices and moving the industry toward more inclusive storytelling. He steered the production of Disney's first liveaction film shot entirely in Africa (QUEEN OF KATWE), three $100M+ budget films helmed by women (A WRINKLE IN TIME, MULAN, THE OLD GUARD), Neflix's iconic revisionist western (THE HARDER THEY FALL), and the first Oscar-winning live-action short by a Black writer/director (TWO DISTANT STRANGERS).
Recognized as a leading voice in the industry, he serves as an Executive Branch Committee Member for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and as Social Services Committee Member for The Motion Picture & Television Fund.
Liz Williams has over 20 years of diversified experience in operations, project management, and business development. A Chicago native and graduate of Claremont McKenna College, her unique perspective is informed by extensive international experience and exceptional intercultural competence: she spent 8 years living and working in Europe and Asia, holds a Master's Degree in International Management from HEC Paris, was a Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan, and speaks French, Mandarin, and Spanish fluently. Film and TV are how she remains connected to the countries she loves; her firm conviction that stories have the power to promote understanding both within and between cultures led her to join 10 by Ten.
Liz has a strong track record of success coordinating operations and managing projects both locally and globally. She began her career as a finance and operations consultant at Andersen Consulting Paris before moving on to Paramount Vantage, where she worked in international marketing and helped ensure the division's first successful presence at the Cannes Film Festival (for BABEL and AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH). Her media experience also includes working as Program Manager for African tech startup StarNews Mobile, where she oversaw content and operations-related projects across seven countries. Liz has also founded and operated two companies of her own, focused on language and cultural education and event programming, serving clients in various industries including entertainment, consumer goods, academia, law, and finance. In 2020 she co-founded The Afara Collective, an anti-racism education nonprofit, where she now serves as a board member.
Maina brings a wealth of experience to the 10 by Ten team, having previously worked for Netflix's Film Division and William Morris Endeavor's Motion Picture Literary Department. At WME, he provided support for the creatives behind some of his favorite films, including Bong Joon Ho and Ruben Östlund. At Netflix, he worked on a range of film projects including THE HARDER THEY FALL, THE OLD GUARD 2, THE WHITE TIGER, and EXTRACTION. He got his start in the entertainment industry as a development and production intern at Working Title, the studio behind such iconic films as FOUR WEDDINGS AND A FUNERAL, FARGO, and NOTTING HILL.
Born in Washington, D.C to immigrant parents, Maina split his formative years between the US and Kenya. His upbringing in very different parts of the world led him to understand the importance of engaging with diverse people, experiences, and perspectives - and instilled in him a passion for global storytelling. This led him to move to England to study film and television production at Edge Hill University, where he also fed his passion for music by finding and reviewing up-and-coming performers for a popular blog.
Maina firmly believes that media can provide a broader, richer perspective on the world and enrich one's life in countless ways.
